Healing in the Atonement

In Isaiah 53:1, the Holy Spirit, through the Prophet Isaiah, asks the question, "Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?"

What "report" is being referred to in this passage? Looking a few verses back at Isaiah 52:14-15, we see a picture of the atonement made by Jesus Christ, the Messiah, referred to as My Servant, the Servant of His Father and our Father.

"As many were astonished at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men: So shall He sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at Him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider."

This scripture is a clear reference to the atoning death and sacrifice of Jesus, the Father's Servant, on the Cross, therefore, it is a portion of the "report of the Lord" referred to in Isa. 53:1. It is likely the most revealing prophecy of the atoning death of Jesus, the Son of God, for all mankind.

The report of the Lord continues through Isaiah 53:6. "For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root (of Jesse) out of a dry ground; He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him." This verse refers to the humble birth of Jesus, being born in a manger, in Bethlehem, being visited and worshipped by shepherds, and His life of relative obscurity until He was baptized by John the Baptist, at the beginning of His ministry, at age thirty.

The gospels bear out the truth of verse 3, which says, "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not." Once a group of people wanted to throw Him over a cliff, but His Father always gave Him a way of escape. Jesus slipped through angry crowds, the Word says. They did not know Who was in their midst. There has been a time in all of our lives when we did not know Who Jesus IS, but, praise God, He has opened our eyes to SEE HIM.

"Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed." Isa. 53:4-5

According to the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament, edited by Harris, Archer, and Waltke, the Servant, Jesus Christ, is described as "having borne the sicknesses and having carried away the people's pains." The verbs are all in the past tense, indicating completed action. God laid on Him the sins and sicknesses of all mankind.

Harris, Archer, and Waltke, point out that the word, "borne," indicates three separate meanings: "to lift; to bear, carry, and support; and to take away." Thus, "borne," clearly shows a picture of removal of sickness from the individual to the Redeemer, Jesus, the Son of God. He bore our sins and sicknesses in His own body on the tree. 1 Peter 2:24

Further, the word, "griefs," may be better translated "sickness," in this passage. The word, "mak'ob," means "pain," and some translations use the word, "sorrow." This meaning is in agreement with "the chastisement of our peace was upon Him," verse 5. When a person, man, woman, or child, is not experiencing the peace of the Lord, that one may be said to be in sorrow, or turmoil. Jesus, the Servant of the Lord, brings peace to our minds as well as to our spirits (hearts) and bodies. His atonement is for the whole man. Jesus is our Kinsman Redeemer, our Healer, and our Peace.

Many New Testament passages bear out these truths. "When the evening was come, they brought unto Him many that were possessed with devils; and He cast out the spirits with His Word, and healed all that were sick: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah, the prophet, saying, "Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses." Matthew 8:16-17

"And there came a leper to Him, beseeching Him, and kneeling down to Him, and saying unto Him, If thou will, thou can make me clean. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth His hand, and touched him, and said unto him, "I will; be thou clean." Mark 1:40-41

The healing of Jairus' daughter and the healing of the woman with the issue of blood are powerful accounts of both the will and the power to heal in the Person of our Lord Jesus, as recorded in Mark 5:21-43.

"How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: Who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him." Acts 10:38

"Who His Own Self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by Whose stripes you were healed." 1 Peter 2:24

There are many more witnesses in the Word of God that healing is provided for mankind in the Atonement of Jesus on the Cross of Calvary. "Let every word be established in the mouth of two or three witnesses," Paul said, under the anointing of the Holy Spirit in 2 Corinthians 13:1.

Just as you receive salvation by faith, you can be healed by faith in Jesus' sacrifice for you. The word, "sozo," which is "salvation," in the Greek, means "salvation from sin, healing of sickness, and deliverance from Satan's bondage of every kind."

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, "sozo-"ed, spirit, soul, and body. Renew your mind to the Word of God in these areas, and let the Holy Spirit speak faith to your heart, then believe, and you shall receive salvation from sin, healing from sickness, peace of mind and soul, or deliverance from whatever kind of bondage the devil is trying to attach to you.

As you have believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, as your Lord and Savior, trusting in Him to save you from your sins, as you repent and turn away from sin and turn to Jesus, the devil has no more claim to any part of your life. Jesus paid it all for you on the Cross of Calvary! Trust His Word that sets you free! For you shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free in every part of your life! It is the express will of the Father. Jesus always did what the Father wanted Him to do. He paid the full price for you and me! Worship Him and receive of His fullness!
